Not someone in particular, but rather an archetype that might return in different forms in paintings to come. She arrived in my sketchbook wearing little bells attached to braids with mismatched laces. There was something about her that felt creative, playful and mischievous all at once. Someone who doesn’t take herself entirely seriously. A kind of attitude I want to carry forward as I grow older. The idea of patches, and what they might carry, had been living in my mind for much longer. I had been thinking about the act of mending, giving attention to what has been damaged, and how an imperfection, and the repair itself, can become part of a story. But I hadn’t yet found where this idea belonged. She seemed to have a natural talent for turning things over in her hands and making something of them. The curiosity to experiment, the patience to mend, the willingness to pick up whatever was lying around and see what could be done with it. She felt like exactly the kind of character who wouldn’t throw something away just because it had been torn. There’s the person we show to the world, changing and adjusting slightly depending on who we’re with. Different parts of us surface in front of different people. And then there are all the other selves beneath that, our instincts, fears and desires, the things we’ve learned to hide, the parts we’ve outgrown, and sometimes the parts we haven’t met yet, or are still learning to know. But I was also thinking about sovereignty. About taking your life into your own hands. Because perhaps taking control doesn’t mean silencing all those different voices within us. Perhaps it means learning to hold them, to listen to them, and still decide for ourselves where we want to go. To me, sovereignty isn’t about becoming one fixed, certain version of yourself. Larger and more elaborate paintings tend to emerge from thoughts I've carried for a long time... questions, ideas and aspects of life I'm still trying to understand or bring to light. Lately, I’ve realised there are also paintings that begin as a kind of intention. It’s when I don’t necessarily paint what I feel or think about, but rather how I long to feel, what I wish to experience more of. I began “Unbounded” at a time when I felt anxious and confined, partly by the external circumstances but perhaps even more by my own mind. I wanted to paint a sense of unrestricted freedom and serenity. In a way it became an attempt to reshape gently my inner landscape. I kept returning to open spaces, softened edges, layers of pale blues, violets and oranges that seemed to breathe more lightly than I could at the time. It made me realise that not every painting reflects where we are. Some paintings emerge from what is present. Others are painted toward what feels possible. Sometimes a painting is not a mirror. I think it’s because of who I’d like to be. But she resisted. It just wasn’t right. Frankly, at that time I didn’t feel it within myself either. Going through harder times I felt weaker and more vulnerable. Fighting desperately against it just made things worse, both for me and the artwork I was creating. I had to stop for a moment, let go of trying to be invincible and simply listen, be patient, and kind to myself. The Faun went through this process with me and I think you can feel her gentle nature full of compassion. It’s as if she was whispering to my ear “Healing Magic is about patience and flowing, not forcing”. When I started this piece I wasn’t sure what shape Blue Magic will take, I just left an empty space there. After a while, the bird came out naturally. There is an ancient legend that promises that anyone who creates thousand origami cranes (senbazuru) will be granted a single wish by the gods. My drawing is inspired by the story of a little girl Sadako who developed Leukemia as an effect of radiation from the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. After learning about the legend she made her goal to fold thousand origami cranes in the hope of recovery from her illness. However, something has changed in her during the process and she decided that a wish for world peace is more important. “I will write “peace” upon your wings and you will fly all over the world” – those are the words assigned to her. Since then Sadako and her cranes became a symbol of hope and peace for the world.
